Integrated Learning for the Construction Industry Using Simulation

Start Date: April 2003
End Date: July 2006

Project Status: Complete

The project will develop new learning environments for construction training using simulation-based techniques. Recent shifts in industry practice towards integrated working require innovative responses to training provision. The development of new learning environments could have a major impact upon construction management training. The implications for construction training are huge as there is great potential to develop the skills necessary to integrate participants around the project. This is particularly important as the construction project becomes increasingly more complex involving more and more specialists. The recent Accelerating Change report (Strategic Forum, 2002) has further developed the notion of integrated project teams, emphasising that it will be a key requirement from construction clients in the future.

The research will pay particular attention to critical success factors for a selected number of construction activities, identifying the processes and knowledge necessary to achieve favourable outcomes. Particular attention will be given to the simulation of the selected activities to demonstrate the causal effects of changes in best practice. The research will identify existing software applications for inclusion as appropriate. In addition, data will be collected from the leading exponents of integrated team working in the selected construction activities. The work will involve the codification of best practice together with the mapping of key supporting processes. The project is fully supported by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) who will participate in data collection in addition to facilitating dissemination.
